Preparing Your Building for Summer Cooling Demand

As temperatures begin to rise, building cooling systems come under increased pressure to maintain comfortable internal conditions. Preparing systems in advance helps ensure they operate efficiently throughout the summer months while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption.

As temperatures begin to rise, building cooling systems come under increased pressure to maintain comfortable internal conditions. Preparing systems in advance helps ensure they operate efficiently throughout the summer months while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption.

One of the first areas to review is cooling optimisation. Control strategies that worked effectively during winter and spring may no longer be appropriate as external temperatures increase. Reviewing system operation before peak summer demand can help prevent inefficiencies developing.

Setpoints should also be assessed. Temperature settings that are too low can lead to overcooling, increased energy use and unnecessary strain on plant. Small adjustments can often maintain comfort while significantly reducing cooling demand.

Chiller readiness is another important consideration. Ensuring chillers, pumps and associated equipment are operating correctly before the hottest periods of the year helps reduce the risk of faults occurring when demand is at its highest.

Avoiding overcooling is particularly important in modern buildings. Excessive cooling not only wastes energy but can also create uncomfortable conditions for occupants. Effective control strategies ensure systems respond appropriately to actual demand rather than operating unnecessarily.

At Concord, we work with clients to review cooling strategies, optimise setpoints and ensure systems are prepared for warmer weather. By taking a proactive approach, buildings can remain comfortable, efficient and well-controlled throughout the summer months.
