Setpoints are a fundamental part of any BEMS, defining how systems respond to conditions within a building. While often simple in concept, incorrect or poorly managed setpoints can have a significant impact on energy use and system performance.
Overheating and overcooling are common issues. If temperature setpoints are too high or too low, systems will work harder than necessary, increasing energy consumption and placing additional strain on equipment. This can also lead to inconsistent comfort levels for occupants.
Achieving the right balance between comfort and efficiency is essential. Setpoints should reflect the intended use of the building, ensuring environments are comfortable without excessive energy use. Small adjustments can often deliver noticeable improvements.
Over time, setpoints can drift. Incremental changes, manual overrides or system adjustments can gradually move values away from their original design. Without regular review, this drift can lead to inefficient operation.
Fine-tuning setpoints in line with seasonal changes is also important. As external temperatures vary, adjusting control parameters helps ensure systems remain efficient throughout the year. When managed correctly, setpoints become a powerful tool for improving energy performance and maintaining consistent building conditions.
